Professional Learning Opportunities
Here at NVEC, we embrace learning and growing to be a better version of ourselves. Many of us have sat through countless hours of “professional development” and left hesitant to apply what we learned. Professional learning opportunities are far from traditional here at NVEC. The goal is simple…we get you comfortable with the idea of feeling uncomfortable so that growth can take place. Professional learning opportunities in which educators have agency leads to improvement of teaching and student outcomes (Calvert,2016).

Understanding
Implicit Bias
Implicit Bias
This is the first step towards learning about anti-racist teaching practices. This is not a lesson but rather an introduction to a lifestyle. In this non-traditional professional learning opportunity, all are welcomed to explore, engage, and learn from one another as we enter the journey of understanding what it really means to be “a good neighbor.”

Introduction to Culturally Responsive Teaching (Part 1)
The purpose of this interactive workshop is to understand what culturally responsive teaching is and how to use this approach in the classroom setting. Participants will identify the benefits of this approach and analyze the steps one must take to be a culturally responsive educator.

Culturally Responsive Teaching in Action (Part 2)
In this second segment we begin to explore what it looks and feels like to be a culturally responsive educator. Participants will try different strategies by testing them out and engaging with one another. This allows for an opportunity to practice implementation but also welcomes space to understand why these teaching practices matter; it also serves as an explicit demonstration of nurturing communal environments.
Intentional Inclusion…am I really being intentional?
Self-reflection and assessment are part of being a culturally responsive educator. In this professional learning opportunity, we take the time to do just that…reflect and assess our current practice. Participants will learn the value of shifting our mindset so that we are intentional with our curricula and family engagement approaches.
